Last night, I saw Neil Young (1945) and his longtime band, Crazy Horse perform at Madison Square Garden. Patti Smith (1949) opened the show. I hadn't been to a big stadium show in 14 years. But it was A's anniversary gift to me this summer.
I just have to say that the seniors really rocked it. At 67, Neil sounded the same and moved the same as he does here in this clip from 1991. It was exciting to see. (Also, the stage setting was the same as it is here. Big Crazy Horse banner. Loved it.
I've seen Patti Smith here in New York three times. Twice for free. She's the most reliably generous performer I've ever seen. Down-to-earth Jersey girl. Gives the people exactly what they want.
I've always had a secret wish to be a rock star, but for this life, I'll have to be content to be a super attentive and appreciative rock fan.

Monday Guest Blogger: Do You Know About the Artist Ms. Shelley Turley? You Should
Full disclosure: Shelley Turley is my sister! Yes, that is how I know her (although I'm certain our paths would have crossed even if we did not share the same dna), but that's not the reason she's on this blog. Point blank: Shelley Turley is one of my favorite contemporary artists. Shelley Turley is the artist you don't know about, but should. Over the years, she's explored in her work the mythology of nurses, hippies, new agers, seekers, healers, pastoralists, spirituralists, and naturalists in American culture. She's been making art steadily for decades and showing in numerous galleries in the west and New York, during which she was a Brooklyn resident for ten years. I'm gonna say it: Shelley Turley should be famous. Perpetually humble and self-effacing, when I asked Shelley what she'd like our readers to know about her, she answered: "I always strive to do my best. Even when my best has not been very good, I keep trying." Check out her art here. Do it!
Here's fellow artist Jesse Wiedel's excellent blog post about Shelley from 2009.

An old one--but one of my all time favorite paintings of Shelley's. |
Yes. I've been in a tight place since 1979.

My Life on the Island
While Lara travels, I can't seem to get off my island, but I enjoy like making lists:
1. Another work Saturday.
2. Picked up a brand new bag at a big bag sale on the way home. I finally have a bag that holds my laptop, pens, lip balm, lipstick, natural hand sanitizer, books, food, water bottle, and extra clothing in the case of a tight-place event, like an apocalypse and I can't get off the island. I'm always going to be ready now.
3. Made guacamole for Cinco de Mayo.

4. Met a friend at a club to see a singer/songwriter she loves, but when . . . 5. I got there the friend wasn't there.
6. I watched the singer/songwriter alone, standing against the wall in a tiny club.
7. I wrote some lines inspired by the Neil Young-esque singer songwriter into a notebook that I had gifted to someone and the giver abandoned it.
8. While watching the singer/songwriter, I noticed a lot of middle-aged women looking at him like the women in the scene from Robert Altman's Nashville below.
9. A week from tonight, Lara will be on my island.
10. Later, we are going to go out and look at the moon which is supposed to be bigger tonight.
