i've always been pretty wimpy, but it's getting worse. so tied to my little routines and my bed. don't know how people who travel frequently keep it together.
tonight at the airport, we had the first full meal sitting at a table in four days. c. really wanted sushi, and i just wanted something warm and comforting, so i ordered a burger (who orders a burger at a sushi place?) but it was kind of special--topped with shisitso pepper aioli AND get this:
a tempura battered slice of bacon.
WHAT????
yes, tempura bacon is a thing.
so we moved eva out of her dorm today, mailed off her books, vinyl l.p.'s (we're vinyl snobs around here) and her record player that c. got her for a high school graduation present. (it was a good one. c. is the best present giver.)
it was quite grueling. then to jfk with 9 bags between us (c.'s gigging equipment and eva's stuff from the last four years.)
ingrid left for port authority to visit a school chum in new jersey, and eva and her best friend said a tearful good-bye on amsterdam and 120th. they became best buddies freshman year and have remained so.
maybe they'll still be tight, like me and julie, in 20 plus years. i hope so. those kinds of friends are the best.
cab ride was eventful. an accident on the tri-borough expressway put us in a cab ride that lasted at least 90 minutes. and we were jammed in with all the luggage.
interestingly, though, our pakistani driver and eva conversed in urdu and he gave her a cd of his favorite poet. we had a long discussion about poetry and biryani, politics in pakistan, and how hard things are in pakistan.
new resolves forthcoming based on this discussion.
home in wonderful, wonderful bed.
practically sleep-bloggin' right now.
night-night.

cherry tights, vinyl, byu make-out spots
cherry tights from paris
on Y mountain. wondering what julie ever did up there.
3) on our way back from dinner & making out, we saw some super adorable children on bikes. as we drew nearer, we noticed that they were probably the cutest kids we'd ever seen. turns out they were ours.
terribly cute children
does this album look familiar, anyone?
5) on thursday night at muse we bought a vinyl record from eyes lips eyes, some of them former students of c.'s, and former members of elizabethan report. they now live in l.a., and are very good. definitely check them out cuz they're awfully tasty. also, their record jackets are individually hand-painted.
our vinyl. we're nerds. hand-painted eyes lips eyes record cover on upper right.
5) record store day! (and julie wrote a rad post about it.) i love all those stores julie mentioned, and being married to a musician, it's quite a topic of conversation and we have quite a collection. the trade-off for not being able to live in nyc is that we have enough space for a big record collection. the kids gave c. radiohead's in rainbows for christmas 2011 and the whole family loves it. if you come over, c. will give you the analog/digital sound test--he'll play the same track on vinyl, cd, and mp3 (he abhors the sound of mp3) and have you guess which is which. almost everyone can tell. seriously, there's nothing like radiohead on vinyl. (i used to live on the same block as tower records in ny on the corner of b'way and 66th. what a store that was for a classical music nerd like me!)
Get Your Vinyl On: The Record Stores of Your Life

Bin flipping at Cake Shop
Today after my library shift, I made sure to observe International Record Store Day, one of my high holidays. I've spent huge chunks of my life flipping through records in record stores, chatting with record store clerks and sliding balancing the edge of vinyl in my palm, placing it carefully on the Technics turntable I picked up the '80s to get me through college. I then spent hours staring at the ceiling while the needle made its way to the center of the record: for years, it was the Doors, and then Led Zeppelin. Also, the Beastie Boys and Black Flag.
Many of my journal entries from that era are basically love letters to my music collection. Music was more than my only vice, many times, as maudlin as it sounds--it seemed like my only friend, or at least my only boyfriend. This is not my memory of college, but the evidence is there: I was more alienated than I remember.
The record stores of my life include Cougar Records (where I bought my first Bowie) and Shenanigans in Provo (where I bought countless records), Cosmic Aeroplane and Raunch (where I got my Husker Du and first little Beastie's seven inch) in Salt Lake. Amoeba in Berkeley. Tower Records in New York and San Francisco, The Record Shop and Bebop Records in Yuma, AZ which I visited during holiday breaks.
After college, I stored my unwieldy collection in my grandmother's basement. When she died in 2008, I had to deal with it. I picked out the best of it for my suitcase and Shelley ended up taking the rest of it back to Portland in a trailer. On a trip to Portland soon after, I basically liquidated most of it on Mississippi Avenue, which is still painful to me.
Now that vinyl is something of a force again, record stores have a reason to stay open. And the annual Record Store Day celebrations are a lot of fun. Other Music had live musician deejays and new vinyl releases. Cake Shop had free bands in the basement from noon to 7:00 pm and the music is still going over there. (Below is my photo of local band Hector's Pets covering Thin Lizzy on Cakeshop's teeny tiny stage.)
The first record I ever owned was The Partridge Family's Sound Magazine which was gifted to me Christmas of '72. Do you have any good vinyl memories?
P.S. My roommate Shannon and I were the only two college girls in Provo I knew who collected records back in the '80s. And even today all of the bodies in front of the record store's bins were dudes. What's up with girls and music collecting? Is it too geeky? Dare I say: unattractive? Too much on the autism spectrum? What?
P.P.S. We are currently NOT set up to listen to vinyl here at the homestead. My collection languishes unlistened to. I think we need a new needle for the Technics turntable that we picked up from a street seller for five bucks. Must continue to investigate.
