Ephemeral Fall Inertia

The view from my computer
I had a big beautiful perfect fall day in which to work, and got not that much done.

One thing I realized is that my fiction--now all in Google docs--is a mess. Completely disorganized. I can't find anything. I was supposed to send some stuff out today, but did not.

But I did randomly pull up a story--my life feels rather random these days--and began to work on it again, and tried to pull it away from its original inspiration--an old friend, no longer living. He died around now--in 2001--a couple of weeks after September 11th of drug-related causes. And I've never gotten over it.

So maybe pulling up that story wasn't so random after all.

Inspired by Lara, several hours after this, I went out to read more in Stuart Dybek's recent collection of flash fictions.

silent family dinner

sunday dinner at bam's is the best.  matt always sports an untied bow tie.

tonight we sat at the wednesday family dinner table, eating silently, listening to radiohead, each of us lamenting a kind of hard and boring day.

bammy's chicken marbella & fab hair.

but we did it anyway.  we sat and supped.  i made dinner, got everyone together, and ate. and we talked.  a little.

the view from bam's deck.

some nights are so happy and loud, some nights stressful, some nights surprising or funny.  you never know.  & you'll never find out if you don't do it.

here's my little plug for sitting down with your family every night you can.  & a plug for making that happen as often as you can.  it's a small but significant anchor in the day, and it puts everything in it's place.

sunday dinner in fall.

i know julie eats frequently in the living room of her amazing  city.  i eat in my suburban kitchen.  either way, it's the sitting, the talking, and the being together that counts.

i love to know what people eat for dinner, what they talk about, what time they eat, what they listen too, any details, small and large about this quotidian event.  i want a giant list of dinner details.  dinner for one, dinner for two, dinner for ten.

so share if you have anything.  anything at all.

go ahead & make my day a little less boring!

Tights High

Tumeric?  Or marigold?  What color are these tights?

I was so excited to put them on this morning, brand new, and the right size.  Brown boots.  Fall and stuff, Lara.

This color, these tights on my legs, got me through my day.

salon on conference saturday

farmer's market tomatoes--last week or two of this bliss.
1) got my hair done in real salon today, the kind where they offer you a drink, give you a scalp massage at the shampoo bowl, and carry your purse, drink, and magazines from station to station for you.  it's been years!  and it was quite glorious.

2) made chicken soup--so good!  with tons of fresh basil, garlic, tomatoes from the farmer's market, some lemon & chili garlic sauce.  ate pizza on the grass from the wood-fired pizza guy.  pistachio and cream pizza.  very good.

3) ate at black sheep cafe.  grandma beth took us, and it was so good.  again.

4) visited my mom, who's been battling a bad infection the whole time she's been in town.  i'm super mad at that infection.

5) suddenly chilled.  even in tights, boots, and a jacket. it's finally fall. & yesterday is really hitting me right about now.  too many big days this week.  good night.  again.
